With the surprisingly good summer weather came start of the World Cup, the 6 weeks long event designed to grab all of our attention. Well at least some of us.
It’s a chance to put on the old jersey on and scream your lungs out or throw stuff at the TV, take your pick. It unites, divides, creates conversational fires (which can only be put out by beer). This is the time when we let it all out. The likes and dislikes, usually deeply rooted in each country’s history. Social media is flooded with world cup news. Who cares about international conflicts and European recession as long as the Spain-Netherlands game is on!
The players of course, the lovely bunch of 11 set on a mission to win the holy grail of soccer. Mostly known from the Champions League. My dear “friends” with whom I meet regularly on Tuesdays and Wednesdays with limited attention and excitement.
Did you know that World Cup is an educational event? For example one of the Honduras players name is Boniek (after the polish player and manager who earned 3rd place in the 1982 World Cup). We have also learned that The mighty Queen can be defeated by la Mamma and Robin van Persie can fly, high.
There is the game itself, fast, technical, dynamical, full of passion and heart. The beautiful pirouettes, dive ins, colourful cards, it’s all part of it. We came a long way from the original peasants game.
To all of you who dread the game give it a go, you might just like it. For those of you who cannot imagine live without soccer, enjoy the game and good luck to your teams!
I’m officially getting into the World Cup mode and putting all my bets on Germany!
