Almost 800 meters incline and almost 800 meters more than regular marathon distance. That’s from route details 😉 I was able to run it in 3:43 minutes. No to bad, I think. Considering that I can’t run hills…
Of course my plan of running flats and ups with 5:30 didn’t workout really. There was one steep hill which you were climbing for over 1 km. On the first lap I was able to do 5:36 but second time was better 5:29. Rest of the splits were below that mark, with some close to 4 minutes per km if that was decline. When looking on to GPX for route I couldn’t see that there will be so many ups and downs. Really was expecting steady climb once, down and up again. Nothing like that. Anyway, route was beautiful so you could enjoy the views during run. Ohh… Almost forgot, weather wasn’t exactly great. During whole race I have spent at least 1.5 hours running in the rain (would call it shower rain but it last too long). Lucky me it wasn’t windy that day, in other case I would probably end up ill. End of the race, happy as a COW surrounded by funny noises made by finisher medals.
I don’t want to sound like I’m whining but I think organization part of marathon should be mention a little. First: marathon length was almost 43 km, my name wasn’t on the starters list (good that I had PayPal payment confirmation), not all the time finishing line was looked after (missed couple of runners, didn’t know if runners actually gave up and did just half instead of full, on some stage finishing line gate collapse), Excel sheet with results is really hard to read. Race was nice but there are things which can be better…
Better side of run… I have met new runners like Giuseppe Panzeri from Venice in Italy. Funny fellow, who dress as a cow before the race. And has been promoting website http://adottaunamucca.net/index.htm, which mainly aimed at children and teenagers (and family) to rediscover the origins of food products that today we find in any shop (about that probably in next post). Have run as well with many friends from MCI and DBRC. Great fun.
So, even if the organizers could do more and the Donegal viallages after season can be like a ghost villages I will probably go back next year.
