Cara Junior School – Cara Scoil

Cara Special School is a purpose built school catering for an about 25 children and adolescents who suffer from Autism and related Intellectual Disability.

Cara School offers a broad and balanced curriculum at each child’s level taking into account individual learning styles. The revised primary school curriculum is followed where possible, with each child accessing it at their individual level of ability and interest.

The staff use internationally recognised approaches to programme delivery adapting and modifying these as individual needs dictate. The most common influences throughout the school include the TEACCH approach and Behavioural approach. They use a variety of therapies which provide for the communication, emotional and sensorial needs of the children including Speech and Language Therapy, Visual Arts Therapy and Music Therapy. It is believed that there are beneficial effects in providing the children with periods of physical activity on a daily basis – reduction in compulsive/obsessional behaviour, hyperactivity and aggressive behaviour being the most prominent benefit.

At the moment school is located in the buildings of old rugby club in Glanmire but new building is being raised now. That is why I am trying to get as much donation as possible to help with building project and maybe more with raising money for new equipment which will need to be put in the new building.

New building project

This project consists of a 16 classroom special school and associated site works. The school is a Special School, tailored for students with Special Needs. There are a number of ancillary rooms including a general purpose room with are modified to meet the requirements of the students.
