I have wrote below post back in November 2011 on my previous blog… That blog was about how a Polish person sees and experience Ireland. And that post… ohhh you can just read it 😉 Link to original post –> http://www.mojairlandia.com/2011/11/27/1429/
It’s that time of the year when we are begin to being bombarded with Christmas. Shop Windows, decorations on the houses and… Christmas songs played on the radio.
I do not know whether already in Poland Wham with their “Last Christmas” reigns on the radio or another part of the Radio Trojka “Friends of the Carp”? But I know that in here, Wham is always loosing to song by The Pogues “Fairytale of New York”. Probably everyone has heard this song at least once in your life. Catchy and shame, that is not very popular in Poland.
The song was written by Irish rock band The Pogues, released in 1987, in a song you can hear the voice of the British singer Kirsty MacColl. “Fairytale of New York” was written by Jem Finer and Shanea MacGowan and placed on the album “If I Should Fall From Grace with God”.
The song tells the story of loneliness during the holidays, the times, when the main character (McGowan) was happy, when everything was great. Everything… till, alcohol and drugs spoil the idyll, when, instead of conversations between lovers, just bickering and insults left. Theme song is very daunting. So hard for me to understand how such “severe” Christmas songs can be a hit.
That song is also connected with a story, quite fresh one. On 18 December 2007, BBC Radio 1 censor song and cut out of the words “faggot” (now the word fagot is quite offensive description of gay person, but according to comedian Mitch Benn it meant lazy person Irish and Liverpool’s slang once) and “slut” (well, it’s simple with this word, is simply a slut, meaning didn’t changed), to make sure that listeners won’t feel offended by the words of the song. The band found this funny, and the listeners themselves felt offended by the fact, that their favorite song was censored. Decision to censored “Fairytale of New York” sparked outrage around the world so great, that the same day BBC Radio 1 withdrew its previous decision.
And after that everything was back to normal and we can still listen in the radio whole song – “Fairytale of New York”.
Maybe is not so bad with my ‘Christmas spirit’ if I was able to go back to that post after hearing ‘Fairytale of New York’ in radio? Definitely station Christmas FM is helping with getting into festive season spirit. That is radio station which is always broadcasting just around Christmas time and the only songs you can hear are the ones connected with that time of the year…
