What you are missing when you are sick…

Missing this one

It looks that end of the year will be time when IBS will be coming back. Crap… Last year I wasn’t able to spot the beginning of the RETURN and I have was still trying to race every weekend. Tried in Clonakilty, had to use toilet about every 7 km. Ended up walking with my Wife almost 20 km. When walking could avoid pit stops. Then was Clontarf where I had to DNF cause of time on the half way (couple pit stops) and had to bring my Mom and Wife to airport. Had to finish in 3:30 or under to manage that. And cause of IBS that wasn’t possible. And than was famous ‘Lock up the year marathon’ where I have spent over 20 minutes in bushes. It took me couple of weeks to put sickness back into remission. But if I would spot earlier symptoms, especially when I was running previous races or on the training sessions I could start intensive treatment earlier and probably stay out of races. Same thing this year. But now I’m little bit more aware of all simptoms. I know that remission is gone and sickness is back. Decided that I need now to stop running races. I will be training but need to be healthy again to seriously race again. For now training and medication. My last marathon run where I wanted to get 3:25 (that is ok time for me now when my body is so beaten up after whole year of running) suppose to be one in Ballina… Read more

Die, die, die My Darling

Homemade food

‘Die, die, die my darling
Don’t utter a single word
Die, die, die my darling
Just shut your pretty eyes
I’ll be seeing you again
Yeah, I’ll be seeing you, in hell’

…and again Misfits/Metallica song, so adequate to situation which happened during the Szczecin marathon…
History in the making. First marathon in my home town, last large city in Poland without race of 26.2 miles, sorry 42.2 km. We are on the continent:) My first marathon in Poland. Strangely enough there was never occasion to run in any of the Polish marathons. Now, I know that will be back on the home soil again to run more races. Reasons later.
Friday was a very long day. Started at 2:30am and finished 11pm. During that time: flight to Szczecin, car collection, got to Szczecin (airport 60 km from city), visited expo, had lunch, back at expo for pacers meeting, meet with family. Oh jeez, busy. Anyway, I was happy to be a day before run in Szczecin. Bad form but that didn’t matter, I was in city where I was born and I was about to run first ever marathon here. Nice. Saturday 8:30am pacers supposed to pick up their balloons with times written on them. Would be ideal to just wake up after 7 (starting line is just 5 minutes drive from my Parents house) but not so easy. My Friends Michal (was pacing with me in Prague and again we were together in Szczecin) and his girlfriend Natalia arrived at 6 Am. It was nice to see them again. They arrived by train. Just after saying hallo we went to the car. On the way back I noticed one lad looking like a runner (still not sure why I thought so). I have asked him if he is here for the marathon. Answer was ‘yes’, so offered lift to starting line. He was quite surprised, same as Natalia and Michal. And I don’t know why… Later, when we were heading to my Parents house for breakfast they have explained that it’s not common to help strangers in Poland (still, unfortunately not much has changed since we left). You can say – cultural differences. Yes… So, breakfast. And then quickly to marathon headquarters to pick up our balloons. I have decided that it should be easy to spot as a pacer and went for very, very bright colour gear. Just for fun. Looking like a light bulb with two balloons strapped to my camera belt. Oh, yes. Forgot to mention, I was running with my TomTom bandit cam, won in their competition. Little bit heavy, ended up running with camera in my hand most of the time. Full gear on, looked little bit silly. But at least runners could easily spot me and that was the point. Although I was running in my home town I couldn’t recognise anyone. There was one friend from primary school, one from secondary school, boss from my very first place of work (photolaboratory when I was a student) the rest… unknown. At the starting line I have noticed my  uncle. Familiar face, family actually 😉 His son was running as well. Haven’t seen him during run. Atmosphere was buzzing, everyone excited. Runners couldn’t stand waiting and supporters wanted to see the race and scream their lungs out…
Start… Slow, trying to get into rhythm. Almost fell when checking pace on my watch and got my foot into small hole in the road (remember, same happened in Prague – caught the cone while checking my pace). Pacing is very dangerous. Found my rhythm. And both, me and Michal started to entertain our groupies. Looked like everyone was excited about the run but at the same time little bit concerned with drag hill on the 34th km. Hill, 2 km drag, which costs many ‘lifes’ during that race (including me, there for the first time I felt pinch in my hamstring followed by quad). But for now, we have started. Everyone happy, chatty. Talking about running experiences, asking quite a lot of questions. Discussing tactics and laughing. Nice bunch of people. At the beginning we were running on the longest street in Szczecin for some time and taking turn towards city hall buildings and Blonia Park. Passing by newest mall addition and heading for castle. Before castle turn, slightly downhill and on the right Cathedral. Left it behind as we were making our way over the bridge to right side of the Odra bank and towards, as we call that part of the city, ‘Right bank’. When we were running through city you could see supporters along the way. Not as many as I would expect but still some. Not to loud but noticeable. Couple of bands and DJs on the way. But that has unfortunately changed on the right side of Odra. Last big group of supporters was on the 8 km mark. Young kids from evangelical school were shouting encouraging ‘made up poems’ at us. But after that, long straight, no turns for next 10 km (until turning point) and no support besides some people waiting at the tram stop or some on the bridges over the road we were running. But most of them haven’t got the idea what we were doing. That was a shame. So, 10 km up, 10.5 back without almost any support (there was DJ on the half way mark, covering two sides of the road). That part of the route wasn’t very exciting. I know that some of the runners actually started to feel fatigue while running that stretch. No support, long boring straight and couple of ups and downs. Morale wasn’t high at this point and some started to remind themselves that we have still that killer of a hill in front of us. Wasn’t great but I think that everyone was back to normal as soon as we passed the bridge and got onto left bank. More support, louder, more was happening, more distractions which were taking your mind off the run in that high temperature. Ohhh, almost forgot. During marathon I would say that easily temperature was about 25 degrees Celsius and not one cloud in the sky (I think that was one of factors which killed me). Left bank. More people, Bozena and Natalia cheering there, more interesting buildings,  more history. Passing by Wały Chrobrego, Odra’s boulevards and heading to famous Szczecin Shipyard. Famous from it’s role during Solidarnosc strikes back in 1980’s. Now, unfortunately not very tempting and interesting (especially for younger generation, but that’s just my opinion). Still huge piece of Szczecin history. Most of the run through shipyard there was no tarmac on the ground so runners had to watch out where to put their feet. Just before shipyard we run via water wall which cooled us down just for couple of minutes. After shipyard same again. This time it suppose to be help before hard incline starting just around the corner. Hill, and not even one. When you saw something which looked like a top of the hill you were so happy but when got there you realised that there is small bend, 50 meters flat and up, up and away again. I think there were three nasty surprises like that. And when you were on the top top of the hill you thought that there should be sharp downhill but nothing like that. Slightly down, not much. Where the hell is that downhill? Climbing for so long and getting that tiny way down. I think that most of the runners were thinking that we will get that downhill eventually but little they knew. As soon I we have passed hospital that was it, whole slide down. Little bit flat and again up. From hospital to finish was about 3 km. At this stage my quad was already acting up. I was trying to keep my composure but knew that if I will make it without walking it will exact 4 hours or just over. I have asked all runners who were still following to speed up little bit and try to get to Michal, who was about 150 meters in front of us. Told them that he will get them on time and there is risk that we won’t make it if they stick with me. Some of them were able to speed up but most were already so exhausted that they stuck with me and no words of encouragement could force them to run faster… And then it has happened 2 km before the finish with 11:30 minutes to 4 hours (actually was a good chance to be there in time) I had to start walking. Quad hurts quite a bit. Had to limp a little bit. Took down my balloons (no point of having these when you won’t make it). When started to walk funny thing had happened. I felt tired and quite hot. During whole run haven’t felt that. I think that body wasn’t actually taking that into account focusing on the run until I  started to walk. Tried to force other struggling runners to give it the final push to the finishing line while limping towards 4:05.
I was very disappointed with my run, with what has happened. Glad that is was over. Crap run but for the first time on the finishing line there was more people than usual cheering for me. My Wife, always there for me. She was already very concerned about me when she saw 4 hours on the clock but not me on the finishing line. My Sister, who was responsible for promotion and media contact for marathon, gave me huge hug right after I passed finishing line. Younger niece, surprised me with a hug and words of ‘I’m so proud of you Uncle’. And my Mum, confused about what just happened. Why I was angry with myself cause I have finished, right? There was as well Michal and Natalia asking if I’m ok.
What can I say? Disappointed with pacing, haven’t managed running in high temperature. Fourth week running hilly marathon is kind of killing me now. On the bright side. Marathon was organised quite good. It was the first attempt, never will be perfect. Nice race pack (value for money, but apparently it is norm in Poland), atmosphere great, little bit disappointed with police behaviour when maintaining the marathon route. Sometimes runners were actually running through the cars. One more strange thing – bikes. Supporting crew riding the whole time with runners and with water and Powerride supplies. Very disturbing for other runners and dangerous when traffic was passing us and somehow at this time bikes were outside running cones, directly on the street. Bright side again. Now all runners know that Szczecin Marathon is a tough one and nobody will just come here to tick the box . You need to have it in you to finish this one (there was quite a few DNF including elite runners – that says something). Will be back again defo and hope to bring more Friends from Ireland. Theresa you are in already, Michelle you have skipped this one (not sure if your excuse was enough but ok), Cezary counting on you… So, let’s meet in Szczecin next year, this time probably in June. Who’s with me??? Read more

Three hills…

Medal

Start loop, conquer three hills, repeat… That in short is Achill marathon. In short but there is so much more to that run…

Achill Island itself is beautiful. That can’t be ruined even by Irish Summer (especially one we had this year). Of course with bad weather it is hard to enjoy views when you there but… you just enjoy being there… So, that what we did over that weekend. Weather wasn’t too bad. Kinda windy, little bit rainy (time to time) but that was expected. Running, walking, being amazed by views. This is Achill… But for all coming down there. Remember to have cash on you… Achill has just one ATM, which is located at the beginning of the island. Yep, that could be a small hiccup. Especially when you need to use cash to pay for B&B. But what will happen if only ATM is ‘OUT OF ORDER’? And that has happened that weekend. I you lucky and need just 100 euro or less you are going to garage. Trying to purchase products for 10 euro which will entitle you to cash back option up to 100 euro. But if you need more you will need to by for 10 euro amount couple of times… Kinda funny… but not when you need cash. Read more

Hamster – part one

Medal for first day

That was night to remember… For the first time I have run during night. Start was scheduled exact for midnight… Hard to work out when to eat last time and how to fight tiredness after early start in work that day. Again new experience. Lately have plenty of these. And last but not least that was marathon run on the track… 95 laps on the lane number 7 or 8 (measurements were taken on the inside on lane 7). And I think that was the biggest challenge. Get the head around that… Read more

New friends

Eating outside

This post was long overdue… Even that in my head I had so many ideas and things to say about Prague Marathon. But I couldn’t just sit and write about that… That weekend was just brilliant. Prague, run, experience, new friends and prospect of coming back there next year… Read more

Dobry den

I'm here to

On the way to Prague now. It is very cold on the plane. Feeling little tired after a whole week of heavy running and heavy eating (especially yesterday). We are probably 40 minutes away from landing in Prague. Not decided yet what we will be doing tonight. Probably just relaxing because it will be too late to visit Expo and Running Mall. I’m excited about my first pacing race. As usual I forgot to pack a few things. This time it’s nothing major like watch or shoes but quite handy when pacing – a pacing band. I have prepared a small excel spreadsheet which is calculating for pace and time based on finishing time goal – ‘very fancy’. Have my logo on the top and branding, but (yet again) forgot to prepare and print it. Maybe they will have a printer at hotel or on the Expo… Will see. Not long to go, cabin crew is starting to sell duty free products. And we have announcement about preparation for landing. Great, couple of minutes left and we will be in Czech Republic for the first time (that one time passing by in the bus doesn’t count). That’s all for now, will continue from the city of Kafka… Read more

Where is my Coke….

Royal food

…and jellies. That was a phrase which was constantly repeating during second half of the Royal Canal Run in Longford. I was able to got my hands on one cup of coke before starting last lap (about 5.2 km per lap, so 8+ loops) but that was already too late to fill energy which deteriorated during run. Apparently I was unlucky cause according to other runners coke was available for last three laps. If that so marshals weren’t able to fill the cups in time for everybody. Other thing we with jellies. These were gone just after first two loops. I think problem was in the amount of runners starting almost at the same time. Marathoners, halves and 10K started just 30 minutes between them, so on the 5.2 km loop there was plenty people fighting for food and water… But that’s only complaint but that one probably cost me my best year result for marathon. Anyways, wasn’t too bad. finished in 3:18:58.
Little bit about marathon itself. Route was exactly same as the one which ‘Marathon men’ have run when they were doing their 32 in 32 days challenge. Quite flat, which just three bumps for bridges. Most of the route was on the hard path and just small bit of tarmac. That was actually really nice for the legs, but still path each wasn’t too wide. Sometimes just one person wide and when you were thinking about overtaking somebody that could be challenging. Am I complaining again? Ok, last one – the weather. Whole weekend prior run was gorgeous, sunny and warm. And on the race day we had heavy rain before the run and temperature drop quite significantly. I was regretting not taking gloves with me. Can you imagine that? End of April and I’m talking about running in gloves. Still, wasn’t as bad as couple last days where I was having my training runs in hale. End of bad part. Cause it was in Longford I have decided that I will drive there in the morning, especially that race was starting at 10 AM. This time was traveling alone. My Wife needed rest after exhausting week in work. Got too Longford, found Longford Slashers GAA and went to registration tent. And there was first surprise. Not just medal and bib number with chip but I was handed as well a technical shirt. Wasn’t expecting that, even that it entry fee was higher than usual for small marathons. Waiting for start in miserable weather. Great that there was so many familiar faces. Could kill time chatting and not paying attention to cold rain. Walking to starting line… Gloves, where are my gloves? Wind stopper checked. Whole way. Start… part on the tarmac, 900 m heading too finishing line (that was that extra needs to be done). Straight on we had couple of fast starters. You could see that they are heading for sub 3 time. I was thinking about 3:30 time and was hoping for 0 pit stop run. But couple of kilometres in and I was feeling great. Decided to pick up little bit on the pace and try to maintain that for the whole duration of the race. Didn’t worked out as I was expecting. Second half of marathon was slower by about 1 minute. Still not too bad. During whole race we could listen to music. And it seems that Brendan (race director) has similar taste in music as me. So, we had INXS, Guns and Roses, Metallica… kind of of Radio Nova party. That was very nice. Whole marathon itself was constant overtaking of other runner (not that I wasn’t overtook by others) on the 5.2 km loop. Even that my second part of the race was slower it was steady enough to allow me to caught up with some runners who were in front of me. There was one guy who, after the race, was complaining that I pass him by just 3 miles before finish line and that I done that for the second time in the raw (apparently did that in Clontarf). My steady run pushed me to 4th place. I was delighted. Time? Not too bad, but there is still room for improvement. After the race I had a small chitchat with Eimer about marathon in Szczecin. I’m trying now to get as many runners from Ireland as possible to run there. If at least 2 or 3 will show up I would consider that as a success. Will see.
Cause I was alone there isn’t any pictures from race day… Read more

54 000 runners

Medal

That was participants record for Paris Marathon. With such a number of runners that marathon become 3rd biggest one in the World, behind New York and Chicago. Huge. That is only word I can think of now. Starting with size of the expo and finishing with length of finish area. On expo we were talking to Warsaw Marathon team and they told us that for the first time they got such a high stand number (something above 400). And that was just for stands which contains nutrition or info about other marathons. There was second part of expo where you could find just a running equipment. Over 3 hours spent there. Pasta party took us just 10 minutes, rest was just walking around and exploring options. Tons of brochures about marathons, new Compress Sport running pants (don’t know how to call them) was the outcome of expo. After expo we headed to hotel, hit the bed or laptop. Saturday was a very quite day if won’t count over 12 km of  run. Including bucket list experience which is was to run under Eiffel tower. Did that. After run and quick shower walk around Paris. We saw a all the thing I saw during my morning run. We saw little bit more. Ended up with 18 km walk which lasted over 7 hours. Baguette at the end of the day and next day marathon… Read more

Strange one

Looking good

It’s a very strange feeling to go to marathon run outside Ireland being alone. Even that both of us (at the moment that is the plan) should run we are getting to Paris separately. Bozena had business meeting yesterday in Orly. So, when I writing these words, sitting in the shuttle bus heading towards Paris, she already has been enjoying capital of France for last 24 hours. My Wife probably will say that it wasn’t anything pleasant cause of the strikes in here for the last two days, time spent travelling from meeting to hotel and the weight of the suitcase. Anyways, now I’m just 75 minutes from Porte Maillot. That is just 3 km walk from our hotel. Of course I will be there before checking-in time but… yeee it is Paris. Time to enjoy the city. Neither my Wife nor me ever been to that city and now we have a chance to use the marathon as an excuse for a visit. ‘Peage’, just saw that sign over the motorway number. We are so familiar with that – paid motorway. When in Nice we always have in car change for toll (sometimes change means 10 euro). Now on the motorway to Paris. Will see if that’s the city of lovers. That marathon will be my second on French soil. Mentioning that cause would like to join Globetrotter Marathon Club in the future and to do that I need to run marathons in 10 different countries. To be provisioned for a member you need to run marathons (or longer) in at least 5 countries. At the moment it doesn’t look too simple for me. I have Ireland (obviously), France, Malta and that is it for the moment. Still in plans – Czech with Prague marathon, Northern Ireland (hopefully treated as UK or separate) with couple of runs including Belfast 12 h, Italy – Gargano if everything will go according to the plan. There is of course US with New York marathon which I’m already sign for but… additional costs are huge. And the last but not least first marathon in Szczecin. September, don’t know if that won’t collide with any other runs but I would like to running this one. Would be a pleasure to race in my hometown. That will give me 8 – if all would be a go. Still missing 2 countries. Spain, Netherlands, Germany, England if NI is treated as separate country? Relatively close, marathons should be in nice places. But that probably next year or even later. Ohh, plans and future. Now I need to focus on the run in two days. I’m still have cold, probably flu as well but… run is a run. Yesterday (Thursday) I have managed to run over 10 km on the lunch break and (another toll on the motorway now) felt good. Pace was ok. Enough for marathon, even much faster than expected. In the evening second session on the treadmill – 15.2 km. Was really hot and running inside was a struggle when breathing. Yesterday I have as well printed document needed to pickup race no. It was so funny to see predicted finishing time (given by me 10 months ago) – 3:45. Now I’m much slower cause thinking more about distance not speed but back then 3:45 would time which I was setting as average for marathons. Long way since my first marathon in Cork… still not even a year.
Can’t wait to see my Wife. Journey is quite long now. Considering that I was up at 3:15 today (in bed just after midnight) and now is already 10:25 CET I have been awake for last 6 hours (little sleep in plane but that really doesn’t count). Oh, and Thursday. Bozena was flying out to Paris. Similar time of waking up. Gave her lift to airport. So, Thursday was as long day 3:30 AM to 12:10 AM. Almost an hour into bus journey. Looking outside the window. Weather – sun behind the clouds, temperature about 17 already. If will stay like that we can prepare ourselves for tricky run. Definitely sun glasses needed. I think that slowly we are getting to Paris now. First industrial estates, tunnel, traffic getting heavier. Maybe it’s because of sickness now but I think I have deja vu. Strange feeling that I know that what is outside the bus, that I was here before. Maybe that’s just a France that I love so much? Who knows. Smog – there is no such a thing in Nice. In here you can see that from miles away. Especially now, when sun is high and shining strong. Would that be a problem during run? Don’t know yet. Just want to get out from that bus. Read more

Not as bad as expected

Different medal

I think that was the first time when I was expecting route to be more hilly than it actually was. Nice surprise. Everything started with email with document I should sign and bring with me to expo. In the email there were as well links to half-marathon and marathon route. Both led to same GPX route. So, I have assumed that same route just two loops. One thing was was just bothering me. It was said that big hill which was daunting runners was taken out from marathon route and on the GPX for half one I could see really bad incline. So, I have prepared myself for two loops with one big incline on each. That expectations but still weren’t sure about the legs after Ballina. Couldn’t say if the legs were heavy or wobbly. Usually before start I can say how I feel. It’s either crap or I’m buzzing can’t wait to start the race. Last Sunday I felt nothing. Completely empty. That was very strange. Didn’t know what to expect. All I knew is that I want just to run my comfortable pace. Knowing that body probably still hasn’t recovered from previous weekend I wasn’t trying to push too hard.
